Be Power Smart!

Enroll in MID's Power Smart program to receive a one-time $50 bill credit. Plus, you'll receive a $20 bill credit each year you are in the program.

About MID's Power Smart Program:

Thermostats make it easy and convenient to manage your home's energy use. Now you can sign up with MID's Power Smart program to receive additional rewards.

By enrolling your thermostat, you agree to let MID make brief, small adjustments to your thermostat during times of peak electric demand. You will receive a $50 bill credit once you have successfully enrolled in the program. If you remain on the program, you will receive an additional $20 bill credit every year.

How it works:

  • Sign Up. If you own a smart thermostat, you may be eligible to participate!
  • If you don't have an existing eligible thermostat, please purchase an eligible model at your preferred retailer and install it. Once you have it installed and activated, come back to enroll your new thermostat in the program.
  • Earn $50 and additional annual incentives. MID will pay you to use less energy by making small, temporary adjustments to your thermostat during times of expected high energy use.
  • Stay in control. You can opt out of thermostat adjustments at any time from your mobile device, web browser or thermostat.
  • Did you know? Your EnergyStar™ qualified smart thermostat is also eligible to receive a rebate through MID. Learn more here!

MID Power Smart Program Frequently Asked Questions

  • This program is a voluntary program for MID residential electric customers who have eligible smart thermostats connected to their central air conditioning.
  • When summer temperatures climb, demand for electricity increases and can cause strain on the grid. Power Smart is designed to help reduce energy use during times of high energy demand. This decreases the use of less efficient and more expensive power sources.
  • Participants agree to brief adjustments of 4 degrees or less to their thermostats during times of expected high energy use from June 1 through September 30. Adjustments to your thermostat typically last no more than 4 hours, and there will be no more than 15 events per season.
  • Participants will receive a one-time $50 bill credit (limit one per household) after successfully enrolling in the program. In addition, participants will receive a $20 bill credit each year.

To be eligible to enroll, you must:

  1. Be an MID residential electric customer and the electric service is in your name.
  2. Use an eligible internet-connected smart thermostat for cooling.
  3. Allow MID to make brief, small thermostat adjustments on days of high energy demand.
You will receive a one-time $50 bill credit after successfully enrolling in the program (one bill credit per household).
You will receive your $50 credit on a future bill after being accepted into the program.
You will receive one $20 bill credit per household every year that you are enrolled in the program. You can enroll for Power Smart at any time, however if you enroll after July 30, you will not receive your bill credit until the following season.

Your thermostat vendor will provide you with the terms and conditions to join the Power Smart program when you request to enroll in the program.

Confirm your eligibility for the program by answering these three questions:

  1. Are you an MID residential electric customer?
  2. Do you use an eligible, internet-connected thermostat to control your central air conditioning?
  3. Will you allow the program to make brief, small thermostat adjustments on high energy demand days or in the event of a system emergency?

If you answered yes to these three questions, please confirm that you have an eligible thermostat to enroll in MID's program.

  • If you have an existing eligible thermostat, click the Enroll Now button. Then, select your thermostat among the eligible models to go to your thermostat's enrollment site and follow a series of simple steps to enroll.
  • If you don't have an existing eligible thermostat, please purchase an eligible model at your preferred retailer and install it. Once you have it installed and activated, come back to enroll your new thermostat in the program.
  • Once your eligibility is confirmed by MID, you will be enrolled in the program. You will receive notification on your enrollment status via email using the address provided in your account registration.
  • EnergyStar™ qualified smart thermostats are eligible to receive a rebate through MID. Learn more here!
Depending on your thermostat provider, notifications will appear on the thermostat or in your web/mobile application.
  • At the start of an adjustment event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted up to 4 degrees above the current temperature setting.
  • The event will typically last less than 4 hours. Once the event is over, your thermostat will return to its normal setting.
Only on event days, your thermostat will be adjusted by 4 degrees or less. Your participation is voluntary and you will retain control of your thermostat. You can easily opt out of an event for any reason.
Yes. During an event, you can opt out from your thermostat, mobile device or web app.
Send an email to support@midpowersmart.com requesting to end your participation in the program. Once you have been taken off the program, your thermostat(s) will no longer be part of the program and you will not receive the annual participation incentive.
